Week 24 at The Montessori Field School

It was camp week!! We welcomed a dozen new friends and a new adult to our forest school. The weather was extremely varied and we experienced everything from temps in the 20s to sunny 70 degree afternoons to nonstop rain. The children were incredibly resilient and embraced everything the forecast sent their way!

Some highlights:

  • Kid's Cafe! Our mud kitchen came to life in a big way this week with the grand opening of the Kid's Cafe. All sorts of creations emerged from hot chocolate to pizza to muffins, and more. There was even a drive thru!

  • Art projects: This week we painted watercolor to represent the spring equinox. Half of the paper featured warm colors (daylight) and the other half featured cool colors (darkness) to depict the equal day/night on the equinox. We also made some pretty neat mud monsters and enjoyed face paint!

  • Slack lines, hammocks, and swings, oh my! With the help of Audra and our Forest Club, we have a new swing at base camp! It took a great deal of perseverance to slingshot a golf ball attached to a string over a high branch and then use the string to feed the rope over the branch. A couple of our older children even used a saw to cut a log for the seat. Beyond the swing, we added a slack line to base camp to practice balance and continued to enjoy relaxing in the hammocks.

  • Time lakeside and creekside: On Thursday we spent our day at the Lake Shelter where we enjoyed learning to use matches and practicing hammering nails into a stump. We also took a big hike to the creek. There are few things in life that can rival the joy of children turning over rocks in a creek bed!

  • Puddle splashing: Friday was the day for water play! We embraced the rain and suited up in our water gear. After hours of splashing and muddy adventures, we changed into dry clothes and enjoyed a warm and relaxing afternoon in the gymnasium at Mount St. Francis.

It was a joy to get to know all of our new camp friends and we hope our paths cross again in the future! Next week we resume our regular schedule.

Things to Look Forward To

  • We are so happy to welcome warmer (yet wetter) spring weather! Continue to dress in layers as the morning are still quite chilly. Especially on rain days, it's a good idea to send several pairs of extra socks and even an extra pair of boots.

See you next week!
